V&A Alexander McQueen Exhibition

Yesterday the Victoria & Albert museum in London was visited, in order to view the highly recommended and promoted exhibition of the couture designer Alexander McQueen. Having grown up in London a lot of his inspiration came from the capital and therefore was the chosen city to host an exhibition showcasing some of the labels best work.

The exhibition was truly outstanding, presenting his work in an environment which made it come to life even in a static exhibition. The clothes were presented in several different environments, reflected in mirrors, in dark lighting under spotlights, walls covered in bone like textures with one room filled floor to ceiling in shelves of his work.

The exhibition told the story of the different loves of Alexander from his background in tailoring, having been an apprentice on Saville Row. To his connections with Scotland and his love of romanticism throughout all of his collections.

The images above show the Scottish influenced collection, presented in a grand hall setting with wood panelled walls giving an extremely grand feel. Presenting all of the clothing in the correct setting for the themes of each collection.

The room above gave the biggest 'WOW' factor of them all, the high ceiling room was filled floor to ceiling of the designers work. Presented along videos of the catwalk shows they featured in. The sheer volume of work to look at was overwhelming each piece crafted to perfection. Shoes, dresses, head pieces, jewellery all with their own unique looks. Although the room provided the 'WOW' factor, some of the garments could not be viewed properly due to their hight/ position on the wall. This was a shame because as a visitor you wanted to get a close view and really appreciate all of the work.

The dress in the centre was the original dress spray painted on the catwalk, which was amazing to see as it was such a memorable part of his show. itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P13oZsD-t4s [14/4/15]

Overall the exhibition was very inspiring and is a must see for all fashion lovers. Not only was it inspiring to see the clothes themselves but also the way in which they were presented giving ideas for future personal exhibitions. Perhaps incorporating some of the displays, lighting, music etc.
